Some of the terminology used in internet.
Domain name-
• Unique names that represent IP address.
• The name is splitted into levels.
•There are other type of organizations.
eg-: edu- educational institute
org- organizations
gov- government agencies
soc- society
mil- militery
•There are some code representing country code.
eg-: uk- United Kingdom
jp- Japan
au- Australia
in- India
se- Sweden
•Server/Host Computer
•A computer which provides information through internet service.
•User name
•It is the login account name.
•Maximum 8 character and no panctuation mark.
• Some name can be assigned to different people as a long as they log into different system.
IP address-
•A unique four part number that identify the location of a computer which transmitting the information.
• TCP(Transmission control protocol)
•Works together with IP to make sure that transmission of information that is already fragmented into packet is error free.
•TCP/IP
•The base protocol of internet
•Enable user to send and receive messages to other user through internet via computer.
•Service provider by e-mail such as :
-- Send text based message to any other user .
-- Attached computer files to text massages.
-- Send to multiple recipient at any time .
-- Reply or forward message.
-- Subscribe to electronic mailing list.
•Usenet News
•User can form a group to discuss certain desired topics.
•A user can send messages to any one.
•FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
• One of the utility which provided by many service provider.
•Allows file to be transferred between kinds of computer , without regard to operating system used by the computer or even how they are connected.
•Gopher
• User can navigate through Gopher information resources using standard menus and sudmenus .
•It is browsing tool to find information that will appear as another menu item in hierarchy.
•User will be able to locate the information without knowing the IP address or domain.
•Internet Relay Chart (IRC)
• Whatever a user typed will instantly be send around world so that other user can respond to the message.
•Archie
•A network service used to locate file are publicly accessible by anonymous FTP
•Specifying a number of character as a criteria can use Archie and it return the user with a list of file names.
•Winsock
•A translator used by Microsoft Windows to communicate with Internet and other TCP/IP network.
•LYNX
• It is a text based program for user to access World wide web (WWW)
•It is generally faster as it doesn't need to transmit graphical images
•HTML(Hyper Text Markup Language)
•A sequence of statement used to desine the web page .
URL(uniform Resource Locator)
•This service identification for all World Wide Web documents. The URL is something refered to as a www page address .Even site and page on the World wide web has a URL. Some URL elements are :
